The Laomei Green Reef on the north coast of Taiwan is covered in a carpet of bright green algae. Named by CNN as one of the eight wonders of Taiwan, the amazing reef attracts large numbers of visitors every Spring in search of photographs, adventure and exploration.
The shifting coastline derives from a volcanic eruption of Datun Mountain that dates to hundreds of thousands or millions of years ago. The catastrophic event fundamentally changed the surface of the earth, producing a unique landscape of gullies and crevices.
The troughs are pounded by powerful gusts of wind and pulsing waves of water that pour through the ridges and sculpt the surface into beautiful shapes capped by algae. The sight only lasts for a few weeks until the algae parches, and the erosion returns to a jumble of bare rock.
