Taiwan’s stability in long-term interests of the United States: AIT Director

Speaking at the opening ceremony for the Yushan Forum on Monday, American Institute in Taiwan Director Raymond Greene emphasized that the United States stands firmly with its Indo-Pacific Allies to decisively respond to threats, and promote common interests.

In his speech, Greene pointed out that since taking office, Trump has made his commitment to world peace clear; whether through trying to rapidly end the Russian invasion of Ukraine in Europe, or by strengthening deterrence methods in the Indo-Pacific region. The Trump administration has stressed multiple times that peace and stability in Taiwan are indispensable to the security and prosperity of the international community and the long-term interests of the United States.

He continued that as conservative estimates put the cost of a cross-Taiwan Strait conflict at 10% of the global GDP, the U.S. will work with international partners to firmly oppose any attempts to unilaterally change the status quo through force or coercion. As reiterated in last week’s G7 foreign minister’s meeting, the U.S. will continue assisting Taiwan as it enhances its self-defense and social resilience in the face of China’s multi-faceted destabilization attempts.

Greene acknowledged President Lai Ching-te’s (賴清德) recently proposed response strategies to the five major threats to national security, saying that Taiwan’s actions to combat Chinese infiltration only strengthen the United State’s ability to cooperate.

He also pointed out how economic cooperation between the two countries would add to the safety, strength, and prosperity of the two sides and the international community at large. TSMC’s announcement to increase investment in Arizona not only helps both sides meet the global chip demand and support AI development, but also replaces China’s position in the supply chain in key areas such as drones and robotics. Thanks to the rapid ongoing transfer of Taiwan’s manufacturing replacing industry investment in China, the U.S. may also accomplish Trump’s mission of “re-industrializing the United States.”
