The case of Kai Kai, a 1-year-old boy who was abused to death by two sisters, has attracted a great deal of public support, including celebrities and legislators.
Ten thousand people have signed a petition calling for severe punishment for the two nannies responsible for 1-year-old boy Kai Kai’s (剴剴) death. Hundreds gathered in front of the Taipei District Court during the preliminary hearing of the case, holding white flowers as a symbol of Kai Kai’s innocence.
Taipei Financial Center Corp. Chairperson Janet Chia (賈永婕), who joined the demonstration, said she believes the heaviest punishment should be imposed for child abuse.
DPP Legislator Lin Yueh-chin (林月琴) also spoke at the event, emphasizing that increasing the penalty for child abuse is not the only priority, and that the legal definition of abuse must also be addressed.
Using a public policy platform, netizens initiated a proposal to increase the criminal liability for child abuse. The proposal was passed in less than a month, crashing the system. Authorities are obligated to respond by May 16.
The case has progressed to the final preliminary hearing, with the trial set to begin by April 22 and sentencing expected by May 13. Meanwhile, Kai Kai’s Warriors continue to rally in support of his cause, both online and in the streets.
