The Foreign Ministry reported on Friday that the Belgian Federal Chamber of Representatives has passed a resolution for the first time condemning China’s threats against Taiwan, marking a significant development in Taiwan-Belgium relations.
The resolution urges Beijing to de-escalate tensions, cease provocations, and respect the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. It also clarifies that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 does not take a stance on Taiwan, and calls on the Belgian government to assert this position at the UN.
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) expressed gratitude for the Belgian Chamber of Representatives’ support and says the ministry will continue to strengthen cooperation between the two nations.
This marks the first pro-Taiwan resolution passed by the Belgian parliament since the new legislative session began in July last year. Previous resolutions in 2015 and 2020 were supportive of Taiwan, but this is the first to condemn China’s actions directly.
The resolution comes as the European Commission and the High Representative of the EU jointly released its European defense white paper. The Foreign Ministry says the document raises concerns over China’s growing pressure on Taiwan. The white paper warns that any changes to the Taiwan Strait’s status quo could lead to severe economic and strategic disruptions for Europe.
