President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) highlighted Taiwan’s growing economic partnership with the U.S. at the American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan on Thursday. He noted that TSMC's announcement in early March to expand its U.S. investment has set a new record for foreign direct greenfield investment in America.
In his speech, President Lai emphasized that the U.S. is Taiwan's primary source of investment, accounting for 11.5% of total foreign investment last year. American companies such as Entegris, Micron, Google, AMD, Nvidia, and major cloud computing firms continue to establish operations in Taiwan. At the same time, the United States has become Taiwan's largest investment destination, with Taiwan's direct and indirect investments in the U.S. representing over 40% of its total foreign investments.
President Lai specifically mentioned TSMC's recently announced $100 billion investment in the U.S. Four years ago, TSMC's investment in Arizona already set a record as the largest foreign direct greenfield investment in the United States. Additionally, Taiwan’s GlobalWafer has established a 12-inch silicon wafer factory in Texas, and many more industries are expected to follow.
The president stressed that the U.S. promotes domestic manufacturing re-industrialization and aims to become the world center for AI while maintaining its high-tech leadership; Taiwan serves as an indispensable partner. While the U.S. holds a leading position in chip design, Taiwan plays a crucial role in semiconductor manufacturing, forming an essential link in the global supply chain.
