President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) presided over a keel-laying ceremony for Taiwan’s first High Latitude Pelagic Patrol Vessel in Kaohsiung on Friday.
Lai says this marks a milestone for Taiwan’s indigenous ship production, reinforcing Taiwan’s maritime security and commitment to self-reliant defense.
The government plans to build six patrol vessels over ten years to enhance offshore patrols and protect Taiwan’s distant-water fishing fleets. The project, backed by NT$19.1 billion (approximately US$576 million), was initiated and approved under former President Tsai Ing-wen (統蔡英) to combat illegal fishing and strengthen maritime law enforcement.
The new vessel features a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system, extending its range to cover vast ocean areas. It can also be used for rescue missions, special operations, and drone deployment.
Lai says that only by achieving local supply and independent production can the strength of independent national defense and maritime patrol be improved. He also reaffirmed Taiwan’s role as a responsible global partner, committed to upholding international fishing regulations and sustainability.
