Little terns cross the sea each year, landing in Taiwan to breed every summer. As the mating season for the protected migratory seabird approaches, the Ocean Conservation Administration is coordinating with various local agencies to enable them to breed successfully.

According to the Coast Guard Administration’s investigation, last year over 500 little tern nests had been built with a breeding success rate of 87%, marking the highest success rate of the past decade. They attributed the success to their newly implemented “tern conservation platform” and the Yilan County Government’s fences and signboards on the sandbar to prevent stray animal and human interference.

The Coast Guard Administration calls on the public to abide by the “four no’s and one must” principle, reminding people to not drive vehicles past the nesting areas, approach nests, let pets wander, or feed the terns, while also paying attention to where you step when visiting the areas.
