A young Burmese girl capable of speaking four languages volunteered as an interpreter in the disaster relief effort in Thailand.
In the wake of the March 28 earthquake in Myanmar, an 11-year-old girl fluent in four languages went to the disaster zone near the collapsed State Audit Office building in Thailand to assist in translation and interpretation. That Thar Watti can speak Burmese, Thai, Chinese, and English.
Relatives of those trapped within the ruins were camped by the disaster site anxiously awaiting news about their loved ones. Accompanied by her parents, the young polyglot helped Burmese in the area communicate with Thai locals.
The family is originally from Myanmar, but moved to Thailand to escape the civil war, which first broke out in 2021. That Thar Watti’s mother said that their relatives are in Yangon, a city about 600 kilometers from Mandalay, and that their extended family is safe.
Those affected by the devastating quake can take solace in the fact that even their youngest compatriots are eager to do what they can to help.
