Military Officials from the United States and China recently held a series of meetings in Shanghai, focused on reducing unsafe People's Liberation Army (PLA) naval and aircraft behavior in the Taiwan Strait, according to a U.S. statement.

As per a U.S. military statement obtained by Reuters, “Military officials from the U.S. traveled to Shanghai, China to meet for working-level talks focused on decreasing the incidences of unsafe and unprofessional PLA Navy and PLA Airforce actions.”

The U.S. has long complained about the unsafe actions of Chinese aircraft and ships in the region, with the Reuters article also referencing the PLA’s recent two-day war game drills around Taiwan, which only concluded last Wednesday.

The talks, officially called the Military Maritime Consultative Agreement (MMCA) working group, are held semi-annually, and lasted from Wednesday to Thursday as reported by CCTV and the U.S. military.

According to the CCTV report, China also pointed out U.S. warship and aircraft activity, conducting reconnaissance, measurements, and high-intensity training, in the sea and airspace opposite China. They said this could easily lead to misunderstandings, and that China would continue to respond to all dangerous provocative acts.
