New Tuvaluan Ambassador Lily Tangisia Faavae presented a copy of her credentials to President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) at the Presidential Office on Tuesday.

In his remarks, Lai began by warmly welcoming Faavae. He reflected on his meeting with Tuvalu’s Prime Minister Feleti Teo last year, which marked the 45th anniversary of Taiwan-Tuvalu diplomatic ties. He shared how the meeting made him feel that Taiwan and Tuvalu are like family.

Lai acknowledged her extensive experience as a public servant, commending her for being vocal about Taiwan’s role at the World Health Assembly during her time as Tuvalu’s health minister. He thanked the Tuvaluan government for its long-standing support of Taiwan’s international participation and partnership, highlighting achievements in areas such as medicine, agriculture, and information technology.

Lai expressed hope that Taiwan and Tuvalu will continue to deepen their bilateral relations, particularly in addressing challenges like climate change and the expansion of authoritarianism, with the goal of promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region.

Faavae emphasized that the diplomatic ties between Tuvalu and Taiwan are grounded in mutual respect and cooperation. She stated that, as a small developing nation, Tuvalu has greatly benefited from Taiwan’s advanced technology and diverse financial aid.

Faavae expressed her belief that both countries share common interests and affirmed that Tuvalu is committed to strengthening its relationship with Taiwan, particularly focusing on the exchange of human rights issues and their shared Austronesian cultural heritage. She highlighted that this cooperation aims to uphold democracy, peace, and prosperity for the people of both nations.
