The Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) has launched a charity fundraiser to gather supplies and donations for victims of the Myanmar earthquake. According to the OCAC's statement on Wednesday, the fundraising efforts not only help earthquake victims overcome immediate challenges but also unite overseas Chinese communities.
OCAC Minister Hsu Chia-ching (徐佳青) announced that the funds will primarily assist local disaster victims, Burmese overseas Chinese schools, and Burmese students studying in Taiwan. Hsu outlined three main areas of support: essential supplies for disaster victims (especially drinking water, food, and urgently needed medical supplies), rehabilitation of overseas Chinese schools, and assistance for Myanmar students currently studying in Taiwan.
Wu Ming-ying (吳明穎), a Taiwanese businessman based in Vietnam serving as the Overseas Compatriot Culture and Education Foundation chairman, has already donated NT$1 million (US$30,000) from his personal funds. Hsu expressed his gratitude and said he hopes this will inspire others to send aid to disaster victims.
The OCAC is organizing prayer events at the University of Taipei and National Chung Hsing University in Taichung on April 11 and 12. These events aim to comfort Myanmar students in Taiwan and help them channel their anxiety through religious healing while sending blessings to the disaster areas. Donations can be provided to the following account from April 8 to May 31:
