From Taipei’s local train all the way to Xinzuoying, Taiwan Railway ticket fares will be going up this summer.

The Taiwan Railway has long been a reliable means of transportation for many people traveling throughout the country. However, the ticket fare, which has remained unchanged for 30 years, is about to go up.

The Cabinet has approved a fare rationalization plan proposed by the railway corporation that will see the average fare increase by about 26.8%. The Taipei-Banqiao local train fare will increase from NT$15 to NT$22 (45 to 65 cents), the Taipei-Hsinchu Tze-Chiang express train fare will increase to NT$253 (US$7.7), the Taipei-Taichung Tze-Chiang fare will increase to NT$501 (US$15), and the Taipei-Xinzuoying fare will increase to NT$975 (US$30). These changes will take effect starting June 23 this year.

Of greater concern to the public is whether ticket prices for the High-Speed Rail will increase. The Transportation Ministry said the two railways wanted to avoid increasing their fares simultaneously, and that the HSR will look into fare adjustments after new trains arrive in two years.
