The 2025 Want to Dance Festival will take place at the Shinehouse Theatre from April 11 to 13. Circus performances, stunts, modern dance, physical theater, and other forms of dance will touch on the issues of gender, aging, self-identity, ethnicity, and faith for this year’s theme: diversity.
Choreographer Chara Kotsali will open the festival with, “to be possessed”, her piece that tells a story of women breaking out of roles, and is based on the phenomenon of women being considered possessed by demons in the Catholic world.
Artist Director Chung Po-yuan (鍾伯淵) says this year’s festival will be complete with programs, workshops, forums, and more. A total of 28 teams were selected to perform from the open audition category, including those from Taiwan, Italy, Spain, Australia, and Mexico. Chung says some of them are drag queens, and some of them use the Taiwanese language as a basis for their creation.
The festival is in its seventh year, and is considered the largest independent dance platform in Taiwan. The event will feature more than 70 performances from across the country and world.
