Taiwan's Foreign Ministry issued a strong statement of protest to the Cambodian government on Monday over the deportation of Taiwanese nationals to China.
Cambodia recently deported nearly 190 telecom fraud suspects to China, including 180 Taiwanese nationals. Under pressure from the Chinese government, Cambodian authorities have not disclosed the specific identities or exact number of the Taiwanese nationals deported.
The Foreign Ministry asserts that it will continue to negotiate with the Cambodian government over the matter. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hsiao Kuang-wei (蕭光偉) told reporters on Tuesday that the ministry has informed both the Justice Ministry and the Mainland Affairs Council about the situation, with the aim of bringing the Taiwanese nationals involved in the case back through appropriate legal mechanisms. He adds that the government will also seek additional information through official cross-strait channels.
The Foreign Ministry says government agencies will continue to coordinate and cooperate with international partners to combat transnational crime and urges Taiwanese nationals not to engage in illegal activities abroad.
