Sizzling steaks and whole fish flipped right in front of you on the grill are all on the menu at some of Yilan’s bed and breakfasts, as fierce competition pushes hosts to go above and beyond.
Some providers are partnering with catering services to offer on-site barbecue meals straight to holidaymakers. Mr. Lin, who runs a B&B, says having grilled or teppanyaki dishes cooked for them is a big attraction for customers.
Amenities like karaoke rooms and automatic mahjong tables are now considered standard, but some are going even further, offering luxury gifts.
One B&B owner, Mr. Lu, says bookings have been down recently, and while on vacation in Greece, he picked up a few extra designer wallets to use as a promotion to drum up more business.
Meanwhile, in Hualien, a different approach is drawing in guests. Homestay owner Mr. Po-Wei offers outdoor activities like stargazing and horse riding. He explains that he is a certified astronomy guide who enjoys sharing his passion with guests, taking them out under the stars and capturing photos of the night sky for them.
With domestic tourism in a downturn since borders opened after the pandemic, B&Bs across Taiwan are getting creative to attract visitors. Whether it's gourmet food, luxury freebies, or immersive experiences, they are certainly finding ways to stand out in a competitive market.
