The Central Weather Administration (CWA) has reviewed its data for the spring season, which ended on Tuesday. Statistics show that not only was there a greater amount of rain, but 2025 was also the third coldest spring since 2011. The number of days with lower-than-average temperatures in Taipei additionally set a record for the highest number in the same period in the past 20 years.
The world experienced the hottest year on record in 2024, and the global average temperature from January through March of this year remained the second highest in history. However, Taiwan experienced the coldest winter in the past 11 years last year, in addition to multiple waves of cold weather from February to April in 2025.
CWA Weather Forecast Center Director Chen Yi-liang (陳怡良) said on Tuesday that convection in the south from the South China Sea to the sea east of the Philippines has been quite active, causing increased cumulative rainfall. He added that the plum rains will occur May through June, with current predictions indicating rainfall will be normal or slightly less than average. Temperatures should be normal when it is not raining, he said, with extremely high temperatures occurring approaching July.
