Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening relations with Canada. With Canada’s federal election underway, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hsiao Kuang-wei (蕭光偉) told reporters on Monday that while Taiwan is closely monitoring the election results, the two countries share a strong and enduring relationship grounded in democratic values and mutual interests.

Hsiao says that Taiwan-Canada ties share strong bipartisan support in Canada. Since Canada announced its Indo-Pacific strategy in 2022, the two countries have seen expanding cooperation in various sectors, including trade, technology, public health, and Indigenous affairs.

Hsiao says that Canadian naval vessels have been active in the region, having transited the Taiwan Strait six times since the Indo-Pacific Strategy was unveiled. He adds that Canada’s Global Affairs department also expressed concerns on social media earlier this year regarding China’s military drills, calling on Beijing to resolve cross-strait differences peacefully. Hsiao says that no matter the election results, Taiwan will continue to promote the positive development of Taiwan-Canada relations.
