In the 2025 Canadian federal election held this Monday, 39-year-old Liberal candidate Wade Chang (張瑋麟) defeated New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh to win a seat in Parliament representing Burnaby Central, British Columbia.

A newcomer to politics, Chang immigrated to Canada from Taiwan with his parents in sixth grade. He has become the second Taiwanese Canadian in history to serve in the federal Parliament. The first was Chungsen Leung (梁中心), elected in 2011 to represent Toronto’s Willowdale riding. Leung lost his seat in the 2015 election and was not re-elected.

Taiwan's representative to Canada Harry Tseng (曾厚仁) told the Central News Agency that Director General of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Vancouver Angel Liu (劉立欣) has already offered congratulations to Chang. Tseng added that the representative office looks forward to deepening engagement with all Members of Parliament, including Chang.

Commenting on Canada’s future Taiwan policy, Tseng noted that the Liberal government under Prime Minister Mark Carney, which introduced the country’s Indo-Pacific Strategy in late 2022, is expected to continue strengthening Canada-Taiwan ties.

The recent federal election saw a voter turnout of 68.65%, the highest in 30 years. While the Liberal Party won 169 seats and secured 43.7% of the vote, it fell short of the 172 seats needed for a majority, forming a minority government instead.
