This year marks the 30th anniversary of Chunghwa Telecom’s internet service, HiNet. Deputy Digital Minister Yeh Ning (葉寧) highlighted the company’s pivotal role in promoting digital equality and enhancing internet resilience over the past three decades at a seminar held on Tuesday to commemorate the event.
Yeh noted that Chunghwa Telecom has been instrumental in advancing Taiwan’s development as a digital nation, helping to establish high-speed internet access as a fundamental right. He says that Taiwan aims to maintain basic communication infrastructure even under extreme conditions such as natural disasters or emergencies. He adds that this resilience ensures that Taiwan remains connected and visible on the global stage, showcasing the nation’s digital capabilities.
Chunghwa Telecom Chairman Alex Chien (簡志誠) stated that HiNet has undergone a remarkable technological evolution from dial-up to fiber-optic communication. From its launch in 1995, it now provides nearly 90% of Taiwan’s internet services. He stressed that HiNet has developed a comprehensive network, spanning submarine cables to satellite systems, to maintain stable connectivity amid challenges like climate change and geopolitical uncertainty. Chien expressed hope that HiNet will continue to grow and lead the way in Taiwan’s high-speed internet development.
