Taiwan has pledged to contribute up to US$2 Million to The Demining Capability Coalition led by Lithuania. This was according to a press release by the Lithuanian Defense Ministry on Tuesday local time. The international cooperation mechanism is aimed at assisting Ukraine’s Defense Ministry in the removal of unexploded mines through the procurement of equipment.
The letter of intent was signed following talks by representatives from the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence, the Defence Material Agency, and the Taiwanese Representative Office in Vilnius. It was witnessed by former President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) who was visiting Lithuania as part of her European trip. The former president expressed her appreciation for the deepening of Taiwan-Lithuania relations after the signing ceremony.
The Lithuanian Defence Ministry highlighted the importance of demining in ensuring civilian safety and reviving economic activity, calling the partnership a concrete example of democratic cooperation contributing to Ukraine’s security and reconstruction. Taiwan has previously partnered with Lithuania on aid projects for Ukraine, including rebuilding war-damaged schools and kindergartens.
