President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) announced that Taiwan has officially entered the era of carbon pricing this year, with the government set to fast-track efforts to align its carbon market system with international standards.

The Environmental Ministry has brought together companies with strong green growth potential and relevant government agencies to form the Green Growth Alliance. It has also secured NT$10 billion (approximately US$333 million) from the National Development Council to launch the Taiwan Green Growth Fund, which will work with top domestic universities to drive scientific research and talent development.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the “Launching Taiwan’s Green Growth: Asia Green Growth Forum,” President Lai underscored that green growth and the 2050 net-zero transition are central pillars of Taiwan’s national development strategy. He highlighted three major milestones announced at the forum.

First, the Green Growth Alliance, comprising 17 local companies and ministries, will strengthen Taiwan’s carbon reduction efforts and engage in in-depth dialogue with Japan’s Green Transformation (GX) Alliance. Together, they will co-launch the Asia Green Growth Forum under a Taiwan-Japan net-zero strategic partnership.Second, the formal unveiling of the Taiwan Green Growth Fund signals a major government-led investment in net-zero and sustainability-focused industries, injecting new momentum into the green economy. Third, the launch of the National Tsing Hua University Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) marks Taiwan’s first academic institution centered on sustainability. The school will partner with the government to cultivate green talent and open new horizons in climate education and research.

President Lai stressed that Taiwan is not just a participant in the global green transition, but a proactive contributor.
