Energy calculator predicts Taiwan lack energy by 2050

A simulation of Taiwan’s energy situation has predicted that by the year 2050, the nation will not produce enough energy to meet its demands.

The simulator is called the Taiwan 2050 Calculator, and it’s based on a similar simulator used in the United Kingdom.

Participants from about two dozen countries and international organizations are in Taiwan to participate in a symposium connected to the simulator. It’s being organized by a government-sponsored think tank the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI).

Premier Mao Chi-kuo spoke at the event on Tuesday. Premier Mao said that the goal of Taiwan’s energy policy is to evaluate the relationship between supply and demand, and assess the risk of a shortage. He said that Taiwan’s energy plan is more like a “multiple choice” problem than a “true or false” question.

“We have a diverse array of options, which present various consequences that we have to face, there is the question of cost, positives and negatives in terms of their ability to reduce carbon emissions," said Mao. "We can objectively look at the relationship between choices and consequences, to prevent people from unreasonable expectations, and to enable them to keep a grip on the practical and sensible options."
