Former chairman of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Su Tseng-chang announced Thursday that he will not run for president in 2016. The DPP began the process of nominating its next presidential candidate on Thursday.
Su said he decided not to run for president when he turned down his second term as DPP chairman in 2014. Su said that he will help campaign for party candidates instead. He said he hopes that the DPP will unite together as a party and win in the 2016 presidential election. He said that the most important thing for the party to do is to improve the current situation, which he said has disappointed the Taiwanese people for the past eight years.
When asked whether DPP chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen’s possible candidacy will affect her job as party chief, Su said that Tsai has been prepared for a long time and believes that she will make all necessary arrangements.
Meanwhile, Su said that he supports his daughter Su Chiao-hui who plans to run for New Taipei City legislator.
