President Ma Ying-jeou says that he has many things he still hopes to accomplish in his remaining time in office. He also said he does not feel that he is a lame duck president or presiding over a caretaker administration.

In an interview with Taipei-based UDN TV late Friday, Ma said he could do a lot of things in the next 15 months. He was responding to suggestions that his administration is in disarray after the ruling party’s crushing defeat in last November’s local elections.

Ma also said that some problems might come up in cross-strait relations, but he said one must look at “long-term, big and far-away goals”. He said certain issues may not be able to be solved immediately, but he said they could be solved step by step. Ma also expressed his belief that “it’s definitely possible” relations with China can still move forward during his term.
