A book called “Love in the 80s” has won the 2014 Golden Butterfly Award, Taiwan’s most prestigious book design competition.

It’s been 11 years in a row since the event was first held in Taipei. This year, the book design by Ho Chia-hsin topped 582 entries to win top honors.

Judges gave Ho’s work high marks, lauding its fusion of tradition with innovation, and past with future. Judges also praised the book design for its seemingly simple but exquisite details, from the book’s cover, to its jacket and the book flap.

This is the first time that Ho has won the gold medal. At an award ceremony on Monday, Ho said he is happy that his style has won recognition.

“I hope to do more and spend more time trying different possibilities so that people can sense that the appearance of the book offers a new sort of vitality,” said Ho.

This year’s gold, silver and bronze medal designs and 27 honorable mentions, will compete in an international book design competition in Leipzig, Germany.
