The Central Weather Bureau said Taiwan will not be affected by an earthquake that registered 6.9 on the Richter scale off the shores of Japan’s main island Tuesday morning.

Japan felt the quake at 8:06 am Japan time. Japan Meteorological Agency said the hypocenter of 10 kilometers caused a one meter high tsunami which could hit the coast of Iwate Prefecture. The prefecture is located on the easternmost point of Japan’s main island.

The bureau reported that the earthquake only caused a 10 cm. high sea level rise. The epicenter was far from Taiwan so the tsunami should not hit Taiwan.
