The justice ministry has called a meeting to review the prison management system.
The 10-hour meeting held Monday came after six armed inmates committed suicide last Thursday in a hostage crisis that lasted 14 hours. The dramatic incident took place in a prison in Kaohsiung.
Deputy Justice Minister Chen Ming-tang said on Tuesday his ministry will map out a short, medium and long term plan to improve prison system management.
The short term plan includes the separation of firearms and ammunition, more effective inmates’ personal safety checks and training for correctional officers.
Chen said the meeting did not review what he called the isolated suicidal case that took place in Kaohsiung last week.
