Economics Minister John Deng said on Monday that import tax rules for six categories of US beef byproducts will be announced on Tuesday. Deng said all sectors involved will be given 30 days to voice their opinions about the new rules.
Taiwan currently bans the import of US beef organs. But six categories of US beef byproducts, including bone marrow, blood vessels, head meat, cheeks, trachea, and tallow will be allowed into Taiwan.
Beef byproducts from the US and Canada will be using the new tax rules to enter Taiwan. Deng said his office will evaluate all the opinions and then decide when to open up the imports of those parts.
Meanwhile, Deng said now is not the time to talk about the import of US pork. Deng relayed the same message to the US when he was on a trip there this month. He also reiterated Taiwan’s intention to join the regional trade pact Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP).
