Taiwan-US TIFA talks scheduled for April: Minister
Economics Minister John Deng

Economics Minister John Deng says a meeting with the United States under the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) is set to take place in April.

Deng’s remarks appeared in the Inside U.S. Trade magazine published on Saturday. The magazine is an important publication for countries around the world to learn more about US trade policies.

In the interview with the magazine, Deng said TIFA talks are a mechanism for the two sides to resolve current trade disputes and also to foster cooperation on emerging technology.

Deng also talked about the reforms that are currently under way in Taiwan. He urged the negotiating parties of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) to set aside geopolitical concerns to allow Taiwan to join the second round of TPP entry negotiations. The US-led TPP is a high-level free trade agreement that is being negotiated among a dozen Pacific countries.

Deng stressed that Taiwan is not pushing a political agenda when seeking to participate in regional economic integration. He said Taiwan is simply looking for a level playing ground for its businesses.
