The top story from this past week was the arrival of the Chinese Lunar New Year holidays. People across Taiwan ushered in the year of the Ram on Thursday.

President Ma Ying-jeou marked the occasion by praying for the peace and prosperity of Taiwan during a visit to Ciyou Temple in Taipei. He handed out lucky red envelopes filled with cash to those who lined up to greet him.

Ma then headed to the southern cities of Tainan and Kaohsiung on Thursday afternoon to visit temples there.

Also this past week, Taiwan has 72 new millionaires as of the first two days of the Chinese New Year holiday. That’s the word from the Taiwan Lottery Company on Friday.

It should be mentioned that it’s very possible that some of the winners already had a million dollars, which is roughly US$31,500.

Every year, the Taiwan Lottery Company adds millions of Taiwan dollars to its Chinese New Year jackpots. Extra drawings are also held with hundreds of prizes available worth at least NT$1 million each.

This year, with total prizes reaching NT$680 million, more than 300 people were expected to become millionaires. Several lucky winners can even become multimillionaires.
