Traffic picks up as Lunar New Year draws to a close
National Highway No. 1

Traffic flooded the nation’s highways on Sunday morning. With the Chinese Lunar New Year holidays drawing to a close, droves of holidaymakers were preparing to return for work, which begins on Tuesday.

Highway police say that there was a noticeable increase in traffic starting at about 9am on Sunday morning, particularly along southern stretches of the nation’s highways, heading in the direction of northern Taiwan, which is home to the greater Taipei metropolitan area. They said that there was another visible bump in traffic after 2pm, with many people opting to eat lunch before setting out.

Before noon, police said that traffic was maintaining a steady pace above 60-70 km per hour on most stretches of highway.
