DPP Chairperson Tsai says she wants to reform constitution
Constitutional Reform

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen outlined her New Year’s goals at the DPP New Year’s gathering on Tuesday. Tsai recently announced that she will be the party’s presidential candidate in 2016.

She said this year will be focused on reform.

"This year will be a year in which we make comprehensive reforms to prepare ourselves. In our work this year, we have four priorities," Tsai said. "First, we need to vitalize our economy. Second, we need to enact justice and fairness in many of our policies and laws. Third, we will continue to protect Taiwan’s democracy, and reform of the constitution is fourth. We hope to start reform of the constitution."

Many experts are saying her biggest challenge in her presidential candidacy is cross-strait policy and gaining US support. That’s because the DPP leans towards independence, which is not acceptable to China.  But Tsai said there are challenges not only in cross-strait policy, but also the economy and society.

She also said that it is too early to discuss who her running mate may be.
