Premier Mao Chi-kuo has spoken to the legislature on the need for property tax reform.
During his speech on Tuesday, Mao said the government must introduce a new unified property tax to prevent speculation and keep prices closer to actual market value. But Mao said the tax will need to be designed to avoid hurting homeowners.
Such a tax could be used to help subsidize the rent of low income households or help pay the interest on the mortgages of low income homeowners.
The premier said the government will only introduce new tax policies gradually after public discussion.
