The US Democratic National Committee (DNC) has passed a resolution lauding Taiwan’s efforts to promote democracy and freedom. This is the first pro-Taiwan resolution that the Democratic Party has passed during US President Barack Obama’s term.
A total of 21 resolutions were passed at the DNC Winter Meeting in Washington DC last week. The resolution concerning Taiwan says that it is a democratic country that has seen five free and fair presidential elections. It also said Taiwan’s open, free, and diverse society is a model for East Asia and the world.
In addition, the resolution says Taiwan has worked closely with the United States to fight global terrorism and provided more than US$7 million to help Iraqi and Syrian refugees.
The resolution concludes that the Democratic Party supports “the strong and deepening relationship between the United States and Taiwan”.
