US Under Secretary for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman says it will take time for Taiwan and China to work out cross-strait issues.
Sherman made the comments on Friday during a conference in Washington DC held by the think tank Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
She said the fact that Taiwan is not mentioned much in Washington DC is probably “a good sign” because it means that Taiwan is stable, prosperous, and has a strong relationship with Mainland China. She also said there have been ups and downs in cross-strait relations and in Taiwan’s relations with other countries. But she said it is a good thing that such relations do not cause anxiety and concern all the time.
When commenting on US-China relations, Sherman said US policy has been “remarkably consistent”. She said as US-China relations matured, the two sides can be frank with each other. She also said the US is true to itself and continues to raise issues of human rights and freedom.
