The legislature is set to begin nominating members of a committee on constitutional reform.
Calls for a new round of constitutional amendments have intensified in the ranks of both the ruling Kuomintang and opposition Democratic Progressive Party since last year’s municipal elections. Proposals have included a shift to a parliamentary system and changes in the way that legislators are elected.
On Wednesday, Legislature President Wang Jyn-ping called legislators together to discuss establishing a committee that will examine all proposals for constitutional amendments.
According to Wang, the 39 seats on the committee will be allocated to different political parties based on the overall proportion of seats they hold in the legislature.
The selection process is expected to wrap up at the end of the month. However, the committee’s decisions will only be the beginning of the reform process. All proposed constitutional amendments must pass in a referendum, and at least 50% of eligible voters must participate before the result is considered valid.
