China reemphasizes '92 Consensus' in cross-strait developments
Chinese President Xi Jinping

Chinese President Xi Jinping has reemphasized that cross-strait relations should be based on the “1992 consensus”. Xi said on Wednesday that if the two sides can hold on to the principle, then China will have no problems interacting with any of Taiwan’s political parties.

Under the 1992 Consensus, Taiwan and Mainland China agree that there is “One China”, but each side may continue to disagree over what “One China” means.

Xi said that cross-strait relations have developed steadily and peacefully in the past eight years, in part thanks to the "1992 Consensus."

In response to Xi’s comment, Taiwan’s top China policy-making body, the Mainland Affairs Council, said that the consensus confirms the existence of the Republic of China on Taiwan. The council said that with the consensus as a guideline, the two sides can continue to enjoy the peaceful progress that has been achieved over the past 7 years.
