A rally against nuclear energy has been planned for Mar. 14.

Stop Nukes Now, a coalition of more than 200 anti-nuclear organizations, announced the rally at a press conference on Friday. It is demanding that Taiwan’s three operating nuclear power plants be decommissioned and that plans for a fourth plant be scrapped.

According to Hung Shen-han, deputy secretary-general of the Green Citizen Action Alliance, this rally is different from previous anti-nuclear events in that the participants will highlight the importance of new energy sources.

"How are we going to develop renewable energy? We need to do more than setting up quantifiable goals," said Hung.

"Renewable energy is very different from centralized energy generation. We’re against nuclear energy and coal-fired energy, so we hope that there will be an environment favorable to the development of green energy. This is very important," he said.

Anti-nuclear groups in Taiwan have held an annual rally since 2011, the year of the Fukushima disaster in Japan. The rally last year drew a record 220,000 participants.
