A photo exhibition marking the 60th anniversary of the Dachen Retreat has opened in New Taipei City.
Vice President Wu Den-yih presided over the opening of the exhibition organized by the Central News Agency.
The historic retreat refers to the evacuation of 18,000 Kuomintang troops and civilians from the Dachen Archipelago off the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang. The evacuees fled to Taiwan under the escort of the US Seventh Fleet in February 1955 after Kuomintang troops were defeated there in attacks by Chinese communist forces.
During the exhibition’s opening ceremony, Vice President Wu Den-yih talked about the importance of peace. He also thanked the people of Dachen for following the Kuomintang to Taiwan and for their contribution to Taiwanese society.
