The government is planning to hold a series of events to mark the 70th anniversary of the Republic of China's victory over Japan in World War II. That’s the word from the Cabinet on Monday.

The Republic of China government, which fought against Japan between 1937 and 1945, relocated to Taiwan in 1949 after losing to the Chinese communist forces in a civil war.

Cabinet Spokesman Sun Lih-chyun said on Monday that the events will include international conferences, exhibitions on war documents, speeches, concerts, and military displays.

“President Ma Ying-jeou has said over and over again that the victory bears four layers of meaning," said Sun. "First of all, the victory showed the endurance of the military of the Republic of China. Second, it proved that the Sino-Japanese war was an important part of the Allies’ battle against the Axis. Third, the retrocession of Taiwan was closely related to the Sino-Japanese War. And last, Taiwanese and\ Japanese people should work peacefully together in the future. So the events commemorating the victory will highlight these four points.”

Sun said that in addition to events in Taiwan, overseas compatriots were planning to mark the occasion as well.
