President seeks closer ties with Belgium
Welcome

President Ma Ying-jeou has told a visiting delegation of Belgian legislators that he hopes to see Taiwan and Belgium develop closer ties.

During a meeting with the visiting legislators on Friday, Ma said that Belgium is an important partner for Taiwan. He said that though Taiwan and Belgium do not enjoy formal diplomatic relations, the two countries share the same core values and have worked together successfully.

Ma said that bilateral investment between the two countries is continuing to grow. He said that concluding free trade agreements and bilateral investment agreements with Taiwan’s trade partners has been one of his administration’s important goals. He told the delegation that he hopes to see Taiwan conclude trade and investment agreements with the European Union in the future.

Ma also noted Taiwan’s extensive cooperation with Belgium in the fields such as technology, air transport, and higher education, and said that Belgium’s working-holiday agreement with Taiwan is significant.
