Culture Minister Lung Yingtai says a planned meeting between her and her Chinese counterpart has been called off.
The culture ministry had previously announced a plan to hold a cross-strait culture forum in Taipei in June. The event would include a dialogue between Lung and her Chinese counterpart.
Lung said on Thursday that the forum has been called off and the forum will be organized by a non-governmental organization instead.
"The forum was originally going to be organized by the culture ministries of Beijing and [Taipei]. We wanted the forum to be hosted by the culture ministers from both sides, but China did not agree on our addressing each other using the official titles," said Lung.
"So we have decided that what was supposed to be a forum hosted by both ministers will now be organized by a non-governmental body,” she said.
Lung said cross-strait peace is very important and Taiwan should do all it can to become a part of the international community. Although the forum will now be organized by a non-governmental body, issues on the agenda will not change. They include the cultural and creative industries, community development, and performing arts exchanges.
