Taiwan’s economics and education ministries are promoting ten water saving tricks to use in the face of one of the nation’s worst droughts in a decade. They say that the ten measures can help save 2,198 liters of water each week.

The ministries are hoping to promote the tips in particular in the nine cities and counties which are facing water shortages. Those areas include: Taipei and New Taipei Cities; Taoyuan City; Hsinchu City and County; Miaoli County; and Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung Cities.

The tips include:

1. taking showers instead of baths

2. using water-saving flushes on toilets

3. using water-saving cycles on washing machines

4. washing cars with buckets instead of hoses

5. conserving cold water that comes out of the faucet while you are waiting for the water to heat up

6. washing vegetables in a basin of water rather than with the water running

7. using the water from washing vegetables to water your plants

8. using a cup of water to rinse when brushing your teeth

9. filling the sink to wash your face, rather than leaving the water running

10. turning the faucet off to apply soap when washing your hands

Officials say that just by changing the way you wash your car, you could save 180 liters of water. And by showering for five minutes instead of taking a bath, you can save 55 liters of water.
