President Ma Ying-jeou has expressed concern for the health of Singapore's founder Lee Kuan Yew as Lee's condition worsens.

The presidential office said on Tuesday that President Ma hopes that Lee recovers soon.

Lee has been in the hospital due to severe pneumonia for the past six months and reports have come out that his health is worsening. Lee is 91 years old.

Foreign ministry official Vanessa Shih also expressed concern on Tuesday for Lee’s health.

"Former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew is a very good friend of the Republic of China,' said Shih.

"The friendship has been a long standing and strong one. Of course we hope he will get well soon, and we believe that he will recover."

Lee is a widely admired political figure in Asia. He is credited with transforming Singapore from a dirty swamp under British colonial rule to a thriving modern state that is one of the world's leading financial centers.

Even after his retirement from politics, Lee continued to keep close ties with the Republic of China and has visited Taiwan many times.
