Taiwan is going to require Chinese tourists to have medical insurance before traveling to Taiwan.
Kuomintang legislator Johnny Chiang said on Tuesday Chinese tourists traveling in groups have their medical expenses covered by their insurance companies if they are injured in Taiwan. But many Chinese tourists traveling by themselves are not insured.
Chiang said local travel agencies pay NT$100 million (US$3.2 million) in advance for medical expenses for Chinese tourists, but that has caused many disputes. Taiwan’s Travel Quality Assurance Association suggests that Taiwan follows the Schengen visa policy that requires all travelers to be insured.
Taiwan’s Transportation Minister Chen Jian-yu said the Tourism Bureau and the National Immigration Agency are amending the law for Chinese tourists. In the future, Chinese tourists applying for visas to Taiwan must be insured.
