New mobile devices expected to boost Taiwan's export orders

The launch of new mobile devices is expected to give a boost to Taiwan’s export orders in March after the country reported lower-than-expected demand for its products in the first two months of this year.

The economics ministry said on Saturday that international brands are gearing up to unveil mobile gadgets and wearable devices to woo consumers, which will benefit Taiwanese electronics exporters by generating more orders for them.

In February, Taiwan’s export orders fell 2.7% from a year earlier to US$29.89 billion, a new low in two years. The ministry said the fall in export orders in February reflected the reduced number of working days in the month because of the Lunar New Year holiday.

However, in the first two months of this year, the country’s export orders rose 3.2% year-on-year. But the growth was still lower than the ministry’s earlier forecast of a 5% rise.
