DPP chairwoman pledges to maintain cross-strait status quo
The next president of Taiwan?

Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen is reiterating that her party will work to maintain the status quo between Taiwan and China if she is elected president next year.

Tsai made the comments on Sunday. She was responding to a call by a formal US official for the DPP to clarify its China policy ahead of the presidential election. The former US official’s comments also drew criticism in Taiwan that Washington is trying to influence the outcome of Taiwan’s presidential election.

Tsai said that she will do her best to maintain the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. She also said the US will stay neutral and had expressed the wish that China will not interfere in Taiwan’s presidential election. Tsai said many parties have a stake in cross-strait peace. She also said the best way is for all parties concerned to sit down and talk to find a way to maintain cross-strait peace that is in line with Taiwanese interests.

Tsai is considered the favorite in next year’s presidential election after her party’s resounding victory in local elections last November.
