Timetable for water rationing unchanged

Taiwan will continue to carry on its water rationing plans despite the recent rainfall. That’s the word from Water Resources Agency official Lai Jiang-hsin on Tuesday.

The recent rain and artificial precipitation have provided a brief respite from drought at the Shihmen Reservoir. But Lai said the third stage of water rationing will begin on April 1st as scheduled.

“When it comes to reservoir storage, most reservoirs remain at a relatively low level except for the Feitsui Reservoir in New Taipei City and the one in Keelung. [In other words], it will take a while before the end of the low-water period, not to mention the unstable weather pattern during the plum rain season. [Therefore], save water resources as much as possible while we still have water,” said Lai.

Taiwan is facing its worst drought in 67 years. The cloud seeding on Monday is estimated to bring 583 more tons of water in the Shihmen Reservoir, which will lengthen water supplies for another week.

Meanwhile, Economics Minister John Deng said he hopes water rationing won’t impact Taiwan’s economy.
