Integrity and equality conditions for AIIB membership: MAC
MAC Minister Andrew Hsia

Taiwan will only participate in the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) on condition that its dignity and equality are ensured. That’s the word from Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Minister Andrew Hsia on Monday.

Hsia told lawmakers that President Ma Ying-jeou has already instructed the Cabinet to take an active role in joining the China-led bank.

Hsia said the Cabinet had called an inter-agency meeting Monday morning to do an evaluation.

The MAC Minister outlined Taiwan’s stance.

“Because the situation of the Republic of China is unique, it’s not that we will have [AIIB membership] when we want it. Only under the conditions of national dignity and equality is [Taiwan] willing to join the bank," said Hsia.

The Republic of China is Taiwan’s official name.

Hsia said the MAC will contact China’s Taiwan Affairs Office if the government decides to join the bank.
