Cabinet may postpone national economic conference to July

The Cabinet may postpone a national economic conference from June to July. Cabinet Spokesman Sun Lih-chyun said Saturday night that the reason for the postponement was that officials were still working out which representatives from the private sector will attend.

Sun said the Cabinet was also considering delaying the conference in order to allow for greater public participation.

The decision to hold a national economic conference was in response to the student-led occupation of Taiwan's legislature from March 18 to April 10. At the heart of the protest was a trade-in-services agreement with China. The controversial agreement was signed in June, 2013, but is still pending in the Legislature.

Premier Jiang Yi-huah announced on April 3 that the government would hold the conference in June. He pledged that the meeting would cover trade and economic issues and would not shy away from Taiwan's complex relationship with China. He said the trade-in-services agreement will be on the agenda, but it would not be the only issue. The meeting will also cover a merchandise trade pact and a dispute resolution system with Beijing, both of which are still being negotiated.
